So, its a little hard going at the moment, working from home or not even having a job is the new 'norm'. Perhaps you are feeling a little bit of anxiety right now with all the uncertainty out there. You know what, that's okay. So much is happening in the world right now, it would be strange not to feel a little worried about it. We all go through bumps in life but how do we build up the resilience to keep going?
I have been through some very tough times myself which started after being in an armed robbery inside a bank some years ago, and so I wanted to share a few tips that helped me get through. No I am not a psychologist or counsellor, I am just someone who hit a brick wall and nearly burnt myself out and had to learn a new way to get my groove back!
Please don't do it alone, there are heaps of services/websites out there, sometimes though it can be hard finding whats right for you and I have listed some below. Something that worked for your friend/partner family might not be quite right for you, so I will do my best to talk about lots of things that just might help. So come follow my blog and I'll try to share what I learnt with you.
These organisations are well established, you have probably heard of them before but if you haven't already been on their websites yet, they have so much good information. I found a great way to learn about mental health and wellbeing was to learn as much as I could about it so these are a great go to. Beyond Blue also has a 24 hour helpline and Movember is especially good for men. Beyondblue.org.au and Movember.com.
Lots of employees have Employment Assistance Programs and they are confidential so it is okay to use them. Many employers will let you have a few sessions at no charge, great for work related issues.
Okay don't do too much of this. Sometime though a Kmart Lipgloss can solve many of the worlds problems.
Don't forget the GP. I know its sometimes hard to find one that are great talking about mental health so have a look on their website and see if they mention it. If not and you have a choice, maybe take a look at another website or give them a ring to see who would be best to talk to. They can also write a referral to a psychologist if needed, some medicare rebates apply and many offer on line sessions that you can do from home.
Okay there are heaps more which I will keep adding on. Of course there are many Apps that might help. I have friends who like Smiling Mind to help sleep, there is another called Re-minder, (suicidecallbackservice.org.au), where you can put a little plan in place to keep you on track, keep in on your phone and use it daily. Music is soo good but if you are listening to something that just makes you feel worse, time for something a little more upbeat. I could make suggestions here but I think I might get hammered by you guys so you choose. If you are under 25, don't forget Kidshelpline.com.au and Headspace.org.au
Reach out to these guys if you need to. They are an awesome service, especially if its 3am and you are not travelling so well. They also offer web chat and texting.. Lifeline.org.au p 13 11 14. Sometimes it can be hard to get through so there's more in my blog that might help. (Don't forget in an emergency please call 000 in Australia).
Way back I was a media photographer, I managed not only to rip the back out of my pants while photographing some kids while down on the floor reading with them to get a great shot (and I managed to hide it from them), to going to a community centre job next door to a church and announcing I was there to take photos (only to discover it was a wake), and even better, all on the same day. I learnt that sometimes you just have to laugh at the mistakes along the way.
I have worked for government, non profit, large corporate entities and small business, more recently coaching resilience programs in the legal sector and government. I hope to educate people on how to get through the bumps (kind of a big one at the moment) and point them in the right direction, to professional services and other fun stuff!
So lets laugh, with others, at that stupid meme we just saw on social media, and especially at ourselves. I will have social media up and running shortly, in the meantime, feel free to email with feedback or comments. Don't forget to look after each other right now, its especially important.
Sarah.
I am not an mental health service so please call your GP if you need further assistance or if you are in Australia call 000 if the risk is immediate.
